Devotees celebrating Thaipusam with Kavadi at Maruthamalai Tamil Month of Thai (Jan – Feb)

1. Thaipusam Brahmotsavam & Therottam

Thaipusam is the biggest festival celebrated at Maruthamalai. It marks the day Goddess Parvati bestowed the divine Vel upon Murugan to eradicate darkness. Spanning 10 magnificent days, the festival features Dwajarohanam (flag hoisting), daily celestial processions, and the pinnacle Car Festival (Therottam) where the ornately decorated wooden chariot carries Lord Murugan around the hill complex amidst lakhs of ecstatic pilgrims.

Key Customs: Paal Kudam (milk pots), Mayil Kavadi, Pushpa Kavadi, and fasting padayatra (pilgrimage by foot) from all parts of Coimbatore and Kongu region.
Panguni Uthiram at Maruthamalai Murugan Temple Tamil Month of Panguni (Mar – Apr)

2. Panguni Uthiram Thirukalyanam

Celebrated on the day when the full moon coincides with the auspicious asterism Uthiram. This marks the divine wedding day of Lord Murugan with Valli and Deivanai. Elaborate Kalyana Utsavam (celestial wedding rituals) and homams are conducted in the grand Kalyana Mandapam, attended by thousands of devotees seeking marital harmony and prosperity.

Key Customs: Thirukalyana Darshan, distribution of sacred wedding prasadams, and flower palanquin procession.
Skanda Sashti festival and Soorasamharam Tamil Month of Aippasi (Oct – Nov)

3. Skanda Sashti & Soorasamharam

A profoundly sacred 6-day fasting festival commemorating Lord Murugan's triumph over the demon king Surapadman. Thousands of devotees observe strict fasting (Sashti Viratham) staying in and around the temple premises. On the sixth evening, the legendary Soorasamharam is reenacted at the foothills, where Lord Murugan vanquishes the demon and transforms him into a sacred peacock and rooster banner.

Key Customs: 6-day fasting, Kandha Sashti Kavasam chanting, Soorasamharam enactment, and Thirukalyanam next morning.
Vaikasi Visakam birth star celebrations Tamil Month of Vaikasi (May – Jun)

4. Vaikasi Visakam (Avathara Dinam)

Marks the incarnation day (birth star) of Lord Murugan, who manifested from the third eye sparks of Lord Shiva to save the universe. Massive continuous abishekams with 108 shankhas (conch shells), fragrant sandal paste, panchamirtham, and tender coconut water take place throughout the day.

Key Customs: 108 Conch Abishekam (Sankabishekam), special alankaram, and grand distribution of Annadhanam.

5. Thiru Karthigai Deepam

During the Karthigai full moon evening, thousands of earthen ghee lamps are illuminated across all 837 steps, mandapams, and corridors. At dusk, the consecrated Maha Deepam copper cauldron is lit atop the temple peak, illuminating the Western Ghats horizon for miles around.

Key Customs: Hilltop Maha Deepam lighting, Chokkapanai bonfire, and thousands of deepams across the hill.
Aadi Krithigai and Monthly Krithigai Tamil Month of Aadi (Jul – Aug)

6. Aadi Krithigai & Monthly Krithigai

Krithigai is the sacred star of Lord Murugan. Aadi Krithigai is observed with exceptional piety as the beginning of the monsoon dakshinayana period. Devotees carry colorful flower kavadis and tender coconut offerings from the foothills.

Key Customs: Pushpa (flower) kavadi, golden chariot (Thanga Ther) procession, special floral alankaram.

Celebrated every month on the Krithigai nakshatra with golden kavadi and special deeparadhanai.

Tuesday Worship (Sevvai)

Tuesday is ruled by Mars (Angarakan), whose presiding deity is Murugan. Devotees visit for relief from Sevvai Dosham.
